Pet Safety tips for the holidays

It’s one thing to prepare your home for the festivities buts it's also important to make sure your Pets in Dubai are prepared for the weather, whether it's in the sunshine or if you travelling with your pet to a destination that has cold weather. It’s entirely another matter altogether when you prepare your pet for winter weather, such as the polar vortex that has been pounding most countries with wet and chilling temperatures.

When faced with cold conditions and frigid temperatures, it becomes even more important to take certain precautions on your pet’s behalf. Here are some tips to help you deal with cold weather and your pet or even if you a buy a puppy in Dubai for holidays,

  • Constantly check on your pet. Extreme cold temperatures can exacerbate many health conditions, such as arthritis. Other diseases, like diabetes or hormonal imbalances, can make it harder for pets to regulate their body temperatures. When freezing temperatures threaten pets, make sure to take the pet to the vet for a regular check up to make sure the pet is in top shape. If your pet has a condition that they need to be treated, it's best to have them on medications before the holidays.

  • Get to know your pet, whether it's a puppy or your furry pal of so many years. It's up to you to understand the pet's limits when it comes to cold temperatures. While pet cats and dogs with thick coats, like Pomeranians in Dubai, may be able to play outside safely for a little while, elderly, sick, or pet's with short fur, will have much less tolerance for the cold, and should only be allowed outside for a short time under supervision and also only if it's absolutely necessary.

  • Watch your pet closely. If your pet begins to show signs of discomfort, it’s important to pay attention and bring him inside right away. You may think a quick walk in the snow will be fun, but if your dog starts whining, shivering, acting anxious or weak, or even slows down or stops, looking for warm places to burrow, he is showing the first signs of hypothermia, so make sure you make him warm immediately.

  • Wash your pet. If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, make sure to wipe your pet’s paws, legs, and belly to remove any traces of antifreeze, or other toxic chemicals he might have picked up as the pet may end up licking them off and poisoning himself.

  • Prepare for an emergency with your pet. Make sure to include some pet supplies, which are available at your Pet Shop in Dubai, for days where the roads seem impassable, making it difficult for you to go outside, either due to cold weather or even a sand storm. So stock up on enough pet food, water, and pet medications to last a few days.

  • Feed your pet all its meals. During the cold weather pets do need extra calories to generate body heat and provide them with energy, but make sure not to overdo it. Pets that are inside the house most of the time should do just fine eating the same amount of food they always do, and in fact, feeding them any extra can cause them a lot of harm as it could lead to health risks from excess weight.
