Travelling long distance with a dog

Holidays are a good time to get some rest and relaxation from the daily grind. However, some owners of Pets in Dubai feel upset and guilty at leaving their beloved furry companions behind while vacationing. Some people consider hiring a pet sitter or pet care facilities to look after the pet during their holidays. However, there are those who are bold, may consider taking their much loved pets on holiday as well. However, this road is less travelled due to factors such as expensive air travel rates, quarantine issue and the possibility of hotels and places not being pet friendly.

Therefore, consider an old fashioned road trip with your pet, the family will love it and so will your four-legged best friend.

Here are some tips to prepare for long distance travel with your pet:

  • Check with the vet. Schedule a visit to the vet before taking the pet on the road as some border's and local authorities may need a copy of the recent vaccinations, especially Puppies in Dubai, where it is mandatory to have their vaccines.

  • Accommodation - Check with the place you are staying if your pet can be accommodated. Pet friendly hotels are more and more common, but make sure to plan ahead and get a confirmation from the hotel that your pets are welcome. Online details are not always authentic and hotels and accommodation options often change their policies from time to time.

Consider a camping trip, Golden Retrievers Dubai love to camp. You can also rent an RV for a cross country trip for pet dogs that are big or of a cross breed. Some breeds like Yorkshire Terriers in Dubai are not allowed on the property due to their nature, so call ahead and check if the camp site or the caravan park will allow your pet on the premises.

  • Make a list of things to take - Make a list of everything you’ll need for your pet while on vacation and pack enough you need to last until the last day. Some pet stores nearby may not have the brand you use. Include the following in your list, dog crate, car restraint, dog food, toys and treats, bedding and beds, first aid kit, food and water bowls, leashes, collar and proof of vaccination.

  • Update all information - If you're is not micro chipped, make sure to get one done at your vet’s office. If the pet is already micro chipped make sure the information is updated with information to include your contact number in case they get lost or wander off.

  • Test Run - Not all pets are used to travelling or taking long car rides. Take a small trip in preparation for the long journey. Build up the amount of time your pet can stay in a car so that you are confident that the pet can handle the long road trip.

Once you are on the road, make sure to give the dog plenty of water and stop every few hours for a stretch and to relieve them.
